Why a Speakers Bureau on Issues Related to Sexual Orientation?

Sexual orientation is a topic that generates lively discussion reflecting different perspectives in our society. There continues to be much confusion and misunderstanding about sexual orientation, which is largely due to the lack of education and information. The Pittsburgh chapter of PFLAG, through our Speakers Bureau, provides an excellent opportunity for people to learn more about sexual orientation in a friendly, non-threatening environment.

What is PFLAG?

PFLAG is a worldwide, not-for-profit organization that promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons, their families and friends. Our mission is threefold: we provide support, to cope with an adverse society, education, to enlighten an ill-informed public and advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure civil rights. PFLAG's Speakers Bureau is a key component of our chapter's mission to educate.

How Does the PFLAG Speakers Bureau Work?

A dialogue with PFLAG Pittsburgh's Speakers Bureau representatives establishes a platform for honest, thoughtful discussion on a variety of issues related to sexual orientation, such as "coming out," and how various religions view homosexuality. Typically, a PFLAG speaking engagement is structured as a panel discussion, with a selection of PFLAG Pittsburgh members. The presentation, which is usually held at your organization's meeting place, will be conducted by a combination of parents and/or other family members of GLBT persons. In addition to providing individual speakers and panel discussions, PFLAG Pittsburgh participates in various events (such as information fairs, diversity training, etc.), where people can learn more about our resources.
