Selection Criteria

Applicant must be accepted to or enrolled in a post-secondary program such as a trade school, training program, junior college, college or university. Students of all ages are welcome to apply.

Application Requirements

The following must be submited to PFLAG Pittsburgh by June 1:

1. Completed application form.

2. One letter of recommendation from someone that can speak to your passion for pursuing additional training or education.

3. Current resumé.

4. Proof of acceptance to post-secondary program.

A maximum of two $500 scholarships will be awarded each year in the summer for the following academic year.

Student must be a resident of Pennsylvania

Any applicant not offered a scholarship in a given year may re-apply simply by sending a letter to PFLAG Pittsburgh. The letter may state that a) nothing has changed or b) provide any relevant updates to the application.

A member of the selection committee may conduct either an in-person or telephone interview. The scholarship selection committee will make all final decision awards by a majority vote.

Scholarship recipient(s) will receive the funds directly in the form of a check.

Dr. George G. West, II was a native of Punxsutawney, PA. He served as a professor at Northern Virginia Community College, Alexandria campus, for over 30 years. He was a strong advocate for non-traditional post-secondary education and higher education for non-traditional students.

Purpose

The purpose of the Dr. George G. West, II Scholarship is to support members of the LGBTQ community in their quest for continuing education beyond high school, regardless of when or how the high school diploma was achieved. We welcome applicants who are pursuing professional and/or trade certifications, associate degree or bachelor degrees.
